Having already been linked to a collaboration with INVINCIBLE and N.HOOLYWOOD, the NB 1906U seems poised to take over 2024. The latest variation in the revived NB 1906R’s catalog, the offshoot delivers a “utility”-inspired aesthetic (hence the “U” in its name instead of “R”). Performance-running heritage is present on the shoe, but breathable mesh bases are replaced with rip-stop textile on the Lunar New Year offerings; other styles of the newly-surfaced update opt for nylon builds.

The upper, in a serene cream mesh, sets the stage for understated elegance. Accents of pale lime green and more brown on the outsole weave in a touch of sophistication, while the classic New Balance grey maintains a connection to its storied heritage. The asymmetrical panel design adds a modern edge to this 2000s runner, making it a standout in both comfort and style.

A plethora of synthetic overlays covers the upper, sharing real estate with a number of translucent details that don’t appear on the standard New Balance 1906R. Jade-colored sockliners appear on pairs in honor of the impending “Year of the Dragon” celebration. According to Confucius, jade (玉) is associated to the virtues of benevolence, fairness, and authenticity, As a final special touch, “NB” logos on the insoles are embroidered instead of printed on.

The changes liken the sneaker to other technical footwear that’s taken over certain segments of the market over the last two years, while also delivering a refreshing aesthetic amongst New Balance’s designs.

What is New Balance 1906R?

The 2002 debuted in 2010 and was considered one of New Balance’s most luxurious running sneakers. It featured a full-length gel midsole tooling, and funnily enough, the New Balance 1906 did too! Why? That is because the 1906 was the original pair that influenced the 2002 model.

From heel to toe, the shape of the New Balance 1906 and its breathable mesh base continued over to the New Balance 2002.

With “R” added to its title to represent its modern-day appearance, there are a few modifications made. You’ll notice that New Balance 1906R now only has the ABZORB gel cushioning unit beneath the heel and not at full-length — just like the 2002R. The design is then complete with New Balance’s N-ergy and Stability Web technologies.

In fact, this midsole is taken from the New Balance 860V2, which entered the market the year after the 2002. Of course, expect the 1906R to come with the same lightweight experience and comfortable cushioning underfoot.
