The Nike Kobe 9 Elite Masterpiece, also known as the “Masterpiece,” is a black basketball shoe by Nike. The multifaceted design is a shining example of Nike’s dedication to innovation-one born out of Kobe Bryant’s hands on approach to the design process and Eric Avar’s passion for performance footwear. Ahead of the shoe’s launch this weekend, the Nike Basketball team got together with those two to touch on nine different design details-each of which is introduced via an insight from Kobe and explained via Avar’s execution.

Performance result: Small details matter, both in basketball and design. The Kobe code is featured on each shoe, both on the lateral (outside) and medial (inside) sides of the midsole. Code on lateral side translates to: ‘Masterpiece.’ Code on medial side translates to ‘Veni, vidi, vici,’ an inspirational Latin phrase that translates to “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
